McCann Moore Architects were approached by the current home owners to replace their dark and uninspiring kitchen area that looked into a dull yard with a bright, contemporary and more relaxed open plan living area that would become a focus for family life and create better connections to the garden. Our solution was to demolish the kitchen area (an earlier extension) and yard and replace these with a crisp modern extension and at the same time integrate various stores and pantries that existed within the fabric of the original house into the new proposal. We rejected pastiche in favour of a crisp, precisely modern solution. The low horizontal form of the addition and restraint in choice of materials promote appropriate deference to the more ornate Victorian architecture original building.
