NEW HOUSE, GREENISLAND
At a time when most people think about putting their feet up, Bobby and Joyce harboured an ambition to build their dream home. Their family home had served them well for years, but with their children now grown up, its outdated, cellular layout no longer suited them. Their expansive garden prevented them spending time on more important greens and fairways! They wanted a new home where they could entertain friends, without being separated in different rooms. The layout should blend seamlessly with outdoors and the building should be easy and efficient to heat and maintain.
The house is a white rendered, two storey main block, under a slate roof with two single storey annexes. The street frontage is undeniably modern, but in a quiet, modest and understated way. The architectural form, materials and building line respect the neighbouring properties, without reverting to pastiche.
While the front elevation doesn’t reveal too much about the house beyond, the plan is much more open and filled with light. We designed the ground floor around an open sided courtyard which floods the house with light. From the entrance hall, the luxurious open plan kitchen and dining room, with a huge set of bi-folding doors, encourages you deeper into the plan.
