NEW HOUSE, DERAMORE
McCann Moore Architects was responsible for the design of this South Belfast home that began life a simple kitchen extension! Remarkably, although the building has been thoroughly revised in terms of materials, finish and appearance, the new house rests on an almost identical footprint to its precedent. The house is arranged on a generous linear plan and accommodation is provided at a two-room depth. Three quarters of the ground floor plan comprises the public zone of the house with its entrance hall, living room, L-shaped kitchen/living/dining area and rear landscaped garden. The remainder of the ground floor accommodates two bedrooms, a study, main bathroom, utility and cloakroom. This arrangement makes the public area of the dwelling the perfect flowing space for entertaining. The house is defined by transparency, a minimal palette, natural light and flowing space. This consistency has been carried through – white walls, pale grey granite floor, grey window frames and slate cladding externally. The overall effect has been softened with large oak sliding doors to the entrance hall and the oak staircase. Walls throughout are white with colour and drama provided through the tiles, timber and furnishings. The rear garden provides a linear harmonious sister space alongside the open plan interiors. We had some fun with the deign of the gardens – three rectangular pools are punctuated by the presence of a recessed water wall at one end to provide movement and sound. At the other end there is a circular table with a central open fire feature and around this is a curved seating area with integrated heating. This area provides a seamless transition from inside to out with the use of frameless glass and large sliding doors.
